Tailor-made book reading, discussion and interactive art sessions
‘The Battle of the Colours is on
To see who is the important one
Is it Purple, Red, Green or Blue?
All they can do is argue…‘
We look at the book cover and discuss what the story could be about.
Is it a story? Is it a game?
• We read the story together, the children joining in the rhyming lines.
Up to 3 art activities can follow:
Colour blending
Learn to paint a rainbow by turning primary colours into secondary colours – how we make orange from yellow and red; green from blue and yellow; purple from blue and red.
Thinking and painting
Children each choose a favourite colour and paint all the relevant things they can think of. For example – yellow: lemons, chicks, sun,
lemonade, eggs.
Colour spinner
Using the provided cards, pens and elastic bands, we do a line drawing on one side of the card (e.g. a tomato); on the other side we paint the whole side with the relevant colour (in this case red). Using the elastic bands we spin the card and the tomato turns red!
Fun with characters
Illustrator Chris Duggan transforms the children’s splashes and splats of colour into characters, just like in the book.
Notes to teacher: decide how much time you want to devote to this workshop, and we’ll tailor-make it for you. Let us know if you want to weave in this term’s curriculum topic.
